At different times of the year visitors flock to this beautiful piece of ‘gods country’. Many families make use of our wharfs, beaches and waterways looking forward to hooking the ‘big one’ or simply catching a ‘feed’.
For those looking for a place to take the kids fishing I have outlined below some suitable spots that offer easy access and safety
SHOAL BAY WHARF
Shoal Bay Wharf is located on Shoal Bay Road directly opposite The Shoal Bay Country Club. This wharf offers a wide variety of fish species as well as squid. Spring tailor, salmon, bream and blackfish are fish well sought after. In the warmer months this is a number one spot for Garfish, bonito and sand whiting. The wharf is Morden, large and very safe for younger children.
Shoal Bay Beach
This is by far one the Port’s most beautiful estuary beaches. Stretching from Tomaree Headland too Nelson Head. This beach offers many types of species such as whiting as flathead during the summer months with bream, salmon and tailor in the cooler months. At the North Western end of the beach under Nelson Head offers protection from Southerly and Westly winds. This beach is extremely safe and although tidal offers high water level at even low tide. Great area to work soft plastics and hard bodied lures. It’s basically snag free.
Little Beach Wharf
This wharf is located at the Southern end of Little Beach close to the Boathouse Restaurant. This area offers blackfish and bream through the winter months. During summer flathead and bonito are best targeted. Casting lures towards the boathouse wharf is a very effective method for flathead. The wharf has recently been extended by NSW DPI offering slightly greater space. Please note for younger children there is no middle beam on the extension. Although this is a great fishing platform I would not recommend it for younger children.
Salamander Shores Wharf
Located on Soldiers Point Road directly opposite Solider Point Bowling club. This is a long safe modern wharf. It is safe for younger ones and offers numerous types of fish. From Northern Bluefin tuna and big jewfish to bream flathead and whiting. Squid is also a popular target. This area offers a great deal of baitfish and other sea life. A great spot for family fishing and is protected from Southerly winds.
Taylors Beach Wharf
The wharf at Taylors Beach has recently been upgraded offering a new floating wharf. Brand new, very safe although not as big as some of our wharfs, there is an opportunity at or around high tide to fish from the beach on either side target species here are flathead, sand/trumpeter whiting and bream. Best baits for the kids worms, prawns and or baby squid. Offers protection from NE winds.
